M-learning can supplement right to education: A Raja

Union minister for communications and IT, Thiru A Raja, said on Wednesday that mobile education can be very effectively used to supplement government efforts around the right to education law.

Speaking at a national forum on Mobile Applications for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development, organised in New Delhi by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the minister highlighted the importance of mobile phones in imparting education, providing healthcare and financial as well as governance services.

Raja said, "Telecom has emerged as the social support for our country. Till now, the use of mobile phone has been limited largely to voice and text messaging. But telecom has now evolved from providing basic voice services to offer a plethora of value added services and apps. Mobile apps are emerging as a very popular tool in providing services such as governance, commerce, education, healthcare, policing and tax payments to citizens."

He spoke of the national e-governance plan under which one lakh common service centres are being launched and said, "It is now time to provide services to citizens through mobile phones. Mobile apps can provide services anywhere and anytime. They will be an empowering tool in the times to come."
