First complete TD-LTE solution showcased

LTE, the next generation of mobile broadband technology, includes two versions: one for paired spectrum, frequency division duplex (FDD); and one for unpaired spectrum, time division duplex (TDD) - or Ericsson's TD-LTE. Widespread global deployment of TD-LTE is expected in the coming years.

At a China Mobile event in Shanghai, China today, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) showcased its complete end-to-end TD-LTE solution for the first time. Together with ST-Ericsson devices, the system successfully showcased super-fast mobile broadband applications such as video on demand (VOD) and video streaming using a live camera.

It has previously been verified that the Ericsson TD-LTE solution has achieved a single user peak rate of 110Mbps in the downlink.

The demonstration today was performed with a USB dongle with a TD-LTE chipset from ST-Ericsson. Ericsson has successfully executed TD-LTE interoperability testing (IOT) with ST-Ericsson, and testing with two other chipset/terminal vendors is expected to be finalized soon.

Ericsson has introduced a new base station as part of its TD-LTE offering. Based on the latest multi-standard base station, RBS 6000, the TD-LTE base station offers a highly integrated solution with minimal dimensions and low energy consumption that is fit for every implementation scenario. In addition, the innovation is capable of supporting LTE Advanced technology, promising operators a smooth migration plan.

Mats H Olsson, President of Ericsson China & North East Asia says: "The successful demonstration today reflects not only Ericsson's undisputed technology leadership in the LTE domain, but also our unwavering commitment to the development of TD-LTE in China and elsewhere in the world. We will make every effort to support China Mobile in bringing revolutionary mobile broadband experiences to tens of millions of Chinese consumers in the near future."
ST-Ericsson, a leader in wireless platforms and semiconductors, was the first in the world to demonstrate a handheld LTE device and to achieve LTE and HSPA mobility with a multimode device. Available next year, ST-Ericsson's next generation modem will support both versions of LTE, in addition to TD-SCDMA and HSPA+/EDGE. With ST-Ericsson's products, Ericsson is now the only player with complete end-to-end TD-LTE capabilities in the industry.

"Drawing on six years of LTE research and development, today's demonstration underlines ST-Ericsson's position as a frontrunner in the rollout of the next-generation of mobile broadband platforms," said Magnus Hansson, Senior Vice President and head of LTE and 3G Modem Solutions at ST-Ericsson. "Through our cooperation with China Mobile and Ericsson, devices based on our chipsets will soon enable people to enjoy the many benefits of super-fast mobile broadband.
